Winnipeg The FIVB (Federation International de Volleyball) has recently
confirmed Winnipeg as the host city for a very important Men¹s World
Championship Qualification Tournament that is scheduled for July 25 27,
2001.
The tournament will feature Team Canada, USA, Barbados, and one other team
from the NORCECA Zone (North - Central American, & Caribbean) yet to be
announced. The winner will gain an automatic berth into the 2002 World
Championships in Argentina.
Newly Appoointed Men's Team Head Coach Stelio DeRocco had this to say
about the announcement: "The WC qualifier means that Winnipeg will play
host once again to top international volleyball. As the team starts a new
chapter and a new Quadrennial the World championship Qualifier tournament
is the beginning of many tough challenges the team must face. The World
Championships is a top priority for the team as it represents one of the
major tournaments of
International Volleyball."
At the 1997 World Championship qualification tournament in Cuba , Canada
(ranked 21st in the World at the time), upset the #1 World ranked Cubans
in the final, in what was considered the beginning of the movement that
propelled Canada to a 10th place world ranking during the next three year
period.
At the last World Championships in 1998, Canada finished in 12th place out
of 24 teams, with memorable wins over Spain, Argentina , Korea and Japan.
