AVP - Huntington Beach
June 15-17, 2001
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF. - Fourth-seeded Scott Ayakatubby and Eduardo Bacil
scored a pair of wins over top-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh here
Sunday (June 17) to capture the Gold Medal at the $62,500 Paul Mitchell AVP
Huntington Beach Open.
Ayakatubby and Bacil, who defeated Ceman and Whitmarsh in the winner's
bracket fourth-round (21-19, 19-21 and 15-13) Sunday morning, scored a
21-14,
16-21 and 17-15 win in the 62-minute title match. Ayakatubby and Bacil, who
shared the $14,000 first-place prize, rallied from 11-7 and 14-12 deficits
to
win the deciding game of the title match.
Ceman and Whitmarsh, who were trying for their third pro beach title
together
on the beach, split $9,250 for the Silver Medal. Echo Entertainment (Studio
City, Calif.) taped the Paul Mitchell AVP Huntington Beach Open action for
broadcast July 16 on FOX Sports Net.
Playing in their first Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) event
together, Ayakatubby and Bacil completed the weekend with six-straight match
wins. Ayakatubby, who has returned to the beach after being sidelined from
full-time play since 1998 due to a variety of injuries, won his 18th pro
beach title. He captured his last domestic title in 1996 (June 30) with
Brian Lewis in Grand Haven, Mich.
Bacil's only other USA pro title was with Jose Loiola at a 1995 indoor event
in Washington, D. C. Bacil, who grew up on Copacabana Beach in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, won Brazilian and South American beach titles prior to
starting his AVP career in 1993.
A winner of five pro beach titles, Ceman was trying to win his
second-straight Huntington title on The Pier courts as he claimed the 2000
crown with Lewis. Whitmarsh, a beach Silver Medallist for the United States
at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games with Mike Dodd, had won 27 pro beach Gold
Medals. Whitmarsh is also the AVP's reigning "King of the Beach" after
winning the crown last October in Las Vegas.
Ceman and Whitmarsh advanced to the finals with a 21-16 and 21-16 win over
second-seeded Nick Hannemann and Andy Jewell. Ayakatubby and Bacil entered
the championship match with a 5-0 AVP Huntington match mark, including a
21-16, 21-23 and 16-14 win over 19th-seeded Mike Lambert and Colin Smith in
the semi-finals.
In the Bronze Medal match, Hannemann and Jewell scored a 21-19 and 21-15 win
over Lambert and Smith in 35 minutes. Hannemann and Jewell shared $6,600
for
third-place while Lambert and Smith split $4,850 for fourth-place. Lambert,
a two-time USA indoor Olympian, was competing in only his fourth pro beach
event while Smith was posting his career best finish.

EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. - The second event on the eight-stop Association of
Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Tour is set for this weekend (June 15-17)
at
The Pier in Huntington Beach, Calif., with the United States' top men pro
beach volleyball players vying for the second-straight week in Southern
California.
Sixty-five (65) men's teams competed in the 2001 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball
Tour season opener this past weekend in Hermosa Beach. Dax Holdren and
Todd
Rogers staged one of the sport's "most impressive" comebacks in defeating
Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana 21-18, 16-21 and 17-15 in the 62-minute
Gold
Medal match.
The $62,500 Paul Mitchell AVP Huntington Beach Open, presented by

Beach legend Karch Kiraly is expected to compete in Huntington after
missing
the Hermosa AVP opener due to a left calf injury. Kiraly, the winningest
player in pro beach history (142 wins and $2,953,568 in earnings), had
entered the Hermosa event with Brent Doble, but withdrew last Thursday.
Kiraly will be seeing his first competitive action Saturday as his 2000
season ended last August on a beach in Belgium where he dislocated his
right
shoulder. The Belgium event was the last Sydney 2000 Olympic-qualifying
event where Blanton and Fonoimoana leaped ahead of Kiraly and Adam
Johnson
for the second USA berth in last September's Bondi Beach competition.
Without Kiraly, Doble picked up Matt Lyles for Hermosa Beach where the
pair
placed fourth after being defeated 21-18 and 21-13 by the top-seeded
Holdren
and Rogers in a 35-minute semi-final. Seeded eighth in the men's Main
Draw,
Doble and Lyles dropped the Bronze Medal match to sixth-seeded Stein
Metzger
and Kevin Wong 22-20 and 21-17 in 46 minutes.
Entries for the Paul Mitchell AVP Huntington Beach Open will be announced
Wednesday with Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh expected to be the
top-seeded
team. Ceman, who captured the 2000 AVP Huntington Beach Open with Brian
Lewis, and Whitmarsh placed ninth in Hermosa after being eliminated by
fifth-seeded Carl Henkel and Sinjin Smith 21-16, 18-21 and 15-12 in 57
minutes.
Whitmarsh, who captured the Silver Medal with Mike Dodd at the 1996
Atlanta
Olympic Games, is the AVP's reigning "King of the Beach" after winning
the
crown last October in Las Vegas. Kiraly, who teamed with Kent Steffes to
win
the Atlanta Gold, is a three-time KOB winner. Kiraly and Johnson also
won
USA Volleyball-sponsored event in 1999 at Huntington Beach.
