World League Pool A: FRA vs. ITA
From FIVB online.
By replacing the setter who played the evening before (Lecat for Chambertin) and by putting in Monneraye immediately, the French surprised the Italians in the first game. The three-point spread at 16-13 turned out to be important up until Antiga's block and Granvorka's ace (23-20, 25-20). In the next two games the Italians completley dominated the action (19-25, 19-25) thanks to attacks by Gionvini and Bernardi and by dominating in the area of service and reception. Chambertin's return to setting gave the French team a jolt-start in the fourth game. With a huge desire to win in defense, the French took over the Italian domination (10-11, 16-12, 19-1, 25-21), caught up with the Italians which led to a final game. The French team took charge in the last game when Daquin at 5-5 scored three points in a row. Elated, the French, after two winning blocks by Monneraye and Chambertin, won an encouraging victory 15-9. "It was a very close game" concluded the Italian Bernardi. "We had a good grip on the match after the third game and we lost the final game because we didn't handle two plays well, and that gave the French confidence."
