The USA Men's National Volleyball Team saw the door close this morning on
their opportunity to play in the final round of the 2001 FIVB World
League. Team USA dropped a three-set match (17-25, 27-29, 17-25) to the
Netherlands in Amsterdam Sunday.
Both teams knew coming in to the match that the winner would advance to
the finals, and the loser would be going home. The Dutch team rallied
around their large, home crowd to easily oust the Americans.
"Holland played a very good match," said USA head coach Doug Beal. "It
is good for our team to play under pressure, we find out how well our
players respond under the most intense pressure. I am disappointed that
we did not play well. The World League is a very good experience for our
players, we need this kind of competition."
Reid Priddy (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola Marymount) led all scorers with
13 points in the match, including 11 kills and two blocks.
Italy, France, Russia, Poland, Cuba, Yugoslavia, Brazil and the
Netherlands advance to the World League finals June 25-30, in Katowice,
Poland.
