HERMOSA BEACH, CALIF. - Four men's and four women's teams posted perfect records here Friday (June 8) to advance from the Qualification Tournaments to the Main Draws as the newly-acquired Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) "officially" launches its 2001 schedule on eight sand courts north of the Hermosa Beach Pier.

With a record 105 teams entering the three-day AVP event, the pro beach volleyball event is part of third annual Mervyn's Beach Bash. The $75,000 men's Side Out AVP Hermosa Beach Open will have a 24-team Main Draw while the $75,000 women's Union Bay AVP Hermosa Beach Open sports a 16-team Main Draw.

A total of 60 men's and women's Main Draw matches will be played Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Sunday's competition starts at 8 a.m. The women's final is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday followed by the men's Gold Medal match.

Sunday's winning teams will share the $16,750 first-place prizes.

Led by Leonard Armato, Management Plus of El Sequndo, Calif., acquired the AVP last month (May 31, 2001) to unite the world's best men's and women's professional beach volleyball players under one umbrella organization.

The unification has attracted the large domestic field for the first of eight stops on the "new" AVP Tour.

In the women's qualifying competition, only one of the top four seeded teams advanced to the Main Draw Saturday. Third-seeded Angie Kammer and Erin Galli scored a 21-16 and 21-9 over sixth-seeded Sarah Schroeder and Kaili Kimura to advance to the women's "money" rounds.

Ninth-seeded Heather Lowe/Carrie Wright, 12th-seeded Daven Casad/Kim Zuffelato and the 15th-seeded Lindquist sisters (Katie and Tracy) scored upset wins to advance to Saturday's women's Main Draw. Lowe and Wright eliminated both eighth-seeded Anne MacArthur/Maggie Philgence (22-20 and 21-17) and top-seeded Marla O'Hara/Julie Sprague (21-15 and 21-17) to earn their Main Draw berth.

Casad and Zuffelato, who upset win over fifth-seeded Mary Baily and Helen Reale 21-18 and 21-15 in the second-round, advanced to the Main Draw with a 21-15 and 21-14 win over 20th-seeded Lisa Marshall and Nikki Audette.

The Lindquists advanced to Saturday's play with upset wins over second-seeded Michelle Morse/Liz Pagano (24-22, 15-21 and 15-13) and seventh-seeded Deanna Johnson/Barbara Nyland (21-15 and 21-10).

The men's qualifying tournament also had only one of the top four seeded teams advance to the "money" rounds. Third-seeded Casey Jennings and Sean Rosenthal advanced to Saturday's play with a 19-21, 21-18 and 15-12 win over 11th-seeded Adam Roberts and Chad Turner.

Chad Mowrey and Scott Lane posted Friday's biggest surprise in the men's qualifier by winning four-straight matches, including three upset wins. Mowrey and Lane upset top-seeded Jerry Graham/Jeff Carlucci (21-13 and 21-17), 17th-seeded Andrew Vazquez/Tom Black (21-15 and 21-15) and 24th-seeded Karl Owens/Doug Foust (16-21, 21-17 and 15-7) to advance to the "money" rounds Saturday.

Other men qualifiers Friday were 12th-seeded Jason Ring/Mark Williams and seventh-seeded Eddie Stokes and Brad Torsone. Ring and Williams advanced with a 21-8 and 21-11 win over 13th-seeded Sean Burke and Matt Olson. Stokes and Torsone earned their Main Draw berth with a 21-17, 21-23 and 15-10 win over 18th-seeded Brian Soldano and James Walls.

Saturday's competition features:

· Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medallists Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana headline the 65-team men's field. The 'golden guys from Sydney's Bondi Beach" are expected to battle Canyon Ceman/Mike Whitmarsh and Dax Holdren/Todd Rogers for the men's title.

· Holly McPeak, the No. 1-ranked women in career earnings ($726,930 with the third-most titles - 55), renews her partnership with Lisa "Lazer" Arce for the Union Bay AVP Hermosa Beach Open. McPeak and Arce teamed to win 14 events in 37 career starts together in 1996 and 1997.

· Olympians Barbra Fontana and Elaine Youngs will battle Arce and McPeak for the United States' No. 1 women's team. Fontana and Youngs started the 2001 season in April by placing fourth in Macau followed by a Gold Medal domestic finish at Clearwater Beach.
