BYU's McGown Coach of the Year

PROVO, Utah (June 4, 2001) -- BYU head coach Carl McGown was today named the American Volleyball Coaches' Association National Coach of the Year.

McGown, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year, led the Cougars to their second NCAA national men's volleyball title with a 3-0 win over UCLA in the championship match. BYU finished the season 23-4 (.852) and was ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches' Top-15 Poll eight times throughout the season.

The Cougars produced a national-best team hitting percentage behind four AVCA All-Americans. BYU, with five MPSF All-Conference selections, was 16-4 against teams ranked among the top 15 final poll, including a 5-0 mark in battles of number-one versus number-two in the polls.

BYU went the entire season without back-to-back losses. The Cougars posted a 9-2 road record against nationally ranked teams and recorded 15 three-game sweeps during the 2001 season, winning 70 of 93 games for a .753 winning percentage.

McGown was selected Tachikara/AVCA Coach of the Year in 1999, the same year the Cougars won their first NCAA title.

The formal presentation of the award will be made Dec. 13, 2001, in San Diego, Calif., at the AVCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championship.
