| The 2006 NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) Girls Youth Continental Championship (U-18) will be contested July 25-30 at Gainesville, Fla. | World Championships on October 31, nearly half a million tickets will go on sale to the general public for the month-long World Championships held in various locations throughout Japan. Twelve gymnasiums in 10 host cities will stage the 208 matches, 104 in both the women's and men's championships. Both the U.S. men's and women's national teams are qualified for the event. For more information the World Championship or for tickets, click here...American Volleyball Coaches Association Executive Director Kathy DeBoer announced the hiring of three core staff members to the organization, rounding out the new team with the Associations move to Lexington. Jason Jones has been hired as the director of marketing & education, Rick Capone has been named the editor of AVCA publications and e-services and Will Engle was chosen as the manager of media relations and membership support. Engle began his tenure with the AVCA on July 11; Jones is set to begin work on July 24, while Capones starting date is August 15. For more information, click here...University of Washington setter Courtney Thompson was one of five female athletes competing for an ESPY Award in the favorite Female College Athlete category. University of Texas softball pitcher Cat Osterman won the title as announced at the ESPY Awards at Los Angeles on July 12. Other nominees included LSUs Seimone Augustus (baskeball), Southern Cals Virginia Powell (track and field) and Portlands Christine Sinclair (soccer)...Gatorade High School Volleyball Player of the Year Megan Hodge, who graduated from Riverside High School (Durham, N.C.) this past spring, was one of five prep athletes up for the female Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year Award. Hodge lost on the bid as basketball player Tina Charles of Christ the King Regional High School (Queens, N.Y) earned the honor on July 12...Almost 10,000 Native athletes from the United States and Canada participated in the North American Indigenous Games last week in Denver. The competitions included volleyball, basketball, wrestling, lacrosse and several other activities...The Gay Games VII starts July 15 in Chicago.
