COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 9, 2007) – The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team suffered its first loss at the 2007 FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship on Monday when it fell to Brazil 1-3 (22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 19-25) in Rabat, Morocco.
The U.S. Junior Men’s record is now 2-1 and they are tied with Brazil and Russia, which defeated Slovenia on Monday, atop Pool B.
Will Price (Laytonsville, Md.) paced the U.S. Junior Men with 21 points on 20 kills and one ace. Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 11 points on eight kills and three blocks. Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored 10 points on eight kills and two blocks. Spencer McLachlin (Honolulu, Hawai’i) scored nine points on eight kills and one block and Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) added eight points on four kills, three blocks and one ace.
Wallace de Souza led Brazil with 20 points on 16 kills and four blocks.
The U.S. Junior Men seemed to win the statistical battle with more kills (52-47), more aces (3-2) and almost as many blocks (10-12) as their opponents. However 34 unforced errors, as opposed to 19 for Brazil, meant trouble for Team USA.
Serve receive, which has been a strength for the U.S. Junior Men, was not as strong on Monday as the team was credited with only 13 “excellents” and five faults in 86 attempts. The United States also had 14 service errors while Brazil had none.
U.S. Men’s Junior Head Coach Andy Read (Long Beach State) started Price at opposite, Anderson and Cole Reinholm (Camarillo, Calif.) as the outsides, Holt and Lipsitz in the middle and Matt Werle (Meadville, Pa.) at setter. Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawai’i) continued to play libero.
McLachlin came in to start the second and third sets for Reinholm, who returned in the fourth. Kevin Carroll (Los Alamitos, Calif.), Sean Pedersen (Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Austin Zahn (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) also subbed in during the match.
The U.S. Junior Men battled back from an 18-24 deficit in the first set to make it 22-24 before Brazil could take the set.
In set two, Team USA trailed 8-6 at the first technical timeout, but battled back to tie the score at 9-9. It eventually led by as much as 16-12 before Brazil cut the lead to 16-15. However, the Brazilians never took the lead. With the United States leading 20-19, the U.S. Junior Men scored the next three points to put the set out of reach of Brazil.
The third set was a game of catch-up for the U.S. Junior Men. Brazil led 8-6 at the first technical timeout and Team USA pulled back to tie the score at 8-8. Brazil took an 11-9 lead and the U.S. Junior Men again tied it at 11-11. But the United States lost steam and Brazil gained a 13-12 advantage and never trailed again.
The U.S. Junior Men tried to play catch-up again in the fourth set, but Brazil held an 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout and never looked back.
Team USA will try to bounce back on Tuesday (July 10) when it faces Slovenia at 2:30 EDT in Rabat.
