Did You Know?
Doug Beal, Coach of the 1984 Gold-Medal-winning U.S. Men´s Olympic Team, outlines his traits a winning volleyball athlete should cultivate in his 1985 book "Spike!" Respect the other team´s athletes. When you block a ball, turn around and celebrate with your teammates. Don´t play them, play yourself. If you only play to win, you limit yourself. You can do better! Play every ball as if it was the most important play of the game. Don´t watch the other players to see what they´re doing. Don´t worry about the score. Play your very best, every play, and the rest will take care of itself. Celebrating together builds enthusiasm and confidence. Playing against yourself builds skill and sportsmanship.

U.S. Men's Junior National Team Loses to Bulgaria at Worlds

The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team kept things close, but couldn’t find the way to victory against Bulgaria on Saturday at the FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship in Rabat, Morocco.

The U.S. Junior Men got 16 points from Will Price (Laytonsville, Md.) and 10 from Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) as they fell 0-3 (24-26, 20-25, 22-25) in the fifth- through eighth-Kawika Shoji of the United States goes to pass the ball as teammates Cole Reinholm, left, and Max Holt, right, stay out of the way during their World Championship match against Bulgaria on July 14. Photo courtesy of the FIVB.place bracket. They will play Cuba on Sunday at 9 a.m. local time (4 a.m. EDT) to determine seventh and eighth place in the 12-team tourney. Russia will play Brazil in Sunday’s championship match in Casablanca.

Bulgaria’s Tsvetan Sokolov dominated the match, finishing with 26 points on 19 kills, four blocks and three aces. Price had 13 kills, two blocks and one ace and Lipsitz scored on nine kills and one block. Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) added nine points on eight kills and two blocks.

U.S. Men’s Junior Head Coach Andy Read (Long Beach State) started Price at opposite, Anderson and Cole Reinholm (Camarillo, Calif.) at the outsides, Holt and Lipsitz in the middle and Matt Werle (Meadville, Pa.) at setter. Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawai’i) continued to play libero.

Kevin Carroll (Los Alamitos, Calif.) started the third set for Reinholm. Austin Zahn (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Spencer McLachlin (Honolulu, Hawai’i) also filled in as substitutes.

The two teams alternated the lead through most of the first set, but Bulgaria reached set point first at 24-22. Price blocked Bulgaria’s Ivan Kolev to tie the score at 24-24, but Kolev took his revenge, winning the next two points with a spike and a stuff of Anderson for the set win.

Bulgaria’s players continued to put pressure on the U.S. Junior Men with their serving, denying the Americans any wide lead in the score over the next two sets.
